SURGERY

Chai the wonder dog

At one time or another your pet may require surgery. We schedule surgeries Monday through Friday. Our skilled surgical staff wants you to feel confident in choosing The Wilton Animal Hospital. All of our patients receive a Pre-Surgical exam and must be current on Rabies, Distemper and if applicable, Heartworm testing.

During your pet's pre-surgical exam, you will have the opportunity to discuss with the Doctor, the procedure, known risks, and recovery expectations. We want you to feel free to ask any questions, because the more you know, the better able you are to make the best decision for you and your pet.

We have available "IN HOUSE" pre-anesthetic blood testing. Pre-surgical blood testing helps assess your pet's readiness for surgery, and allows the Doctor to make the most informed decision about the type and dose of anesthesia your pet will require.

Our surgical staff is experienced in performing most elective and emergency surgeries. More advanced procedures can be performed here by Dr. Geoff Clark, a Board Certified Surgeon.

Bowl of biscuits

We recommend that you take up your pet's food around 6:00pm the night before surgery is scheduled. It's "OK" to leave down your pets water. Please follow these instructions carefully. Your pet may be insistent that breakfast must be served, but a meal too soon before surgery can cause a dangerous situation during recovery. Your pet's pre-surgical exam will be scheduled between 8:15am and 9:00am.

Antiobiotics or pain medications may be prescribed for your pet to take prior to surgery, or during recovery. Be sure to read and follow all instructions carefully. It is very important to administer all medications accurately and completely.

Recovery from Surgery

post surgery

We encourage you to call the hospital in the early afternoon to check up on how your pet is doing and when they will be discharged.
When you pick up your pet, you will receive instructions on how to best help your pet recover comfortably. The receptionist will also schedule a post-operative check-up, if needed.

Chai resting

Your pet will need more rest after surgery. If you are in doubt about your pet's behavior after surgery, discuss your observations with the veterinarian. Any post-surgical emergency should be reported immediately.
Follow the instructions on any post-surgical medications carefully. Be sure to keep all veterinary medications out of reach of any children in the house. Ask about any possible side effects, and report any adverse side effects immediately.
Under no circumstances should any medications be given to your pet that your veterinarian has not prescribed. Some human medications can be dangerous, or even fatal, to your pets.
